China has imposed new export controls on 40 Japanese entities, accusing them of bolstering Japan’s military capabilities and supporting its “remilitarization” efforts. These measures affect 20 Japanese companies and divisions, including subsidiaries of major corporations, by restricting Chinese and foreign exporters from selling them dual-use goods that could have both civilian and military applications. Additionally, another 20 Japanese entities have been placed on a watch list, requiring exporters to obtain special approvals, conduct risk assessments, and ensure their products are not used for military purposes.
The Chinese government defended these restrictions as necessary to curb what it perceives as Japan’s increasing military expansion. Beijing has voiced concerns about Japan’s efforts to enhance its defense capabilities, particularly with regard to long-range weapons and closer security ties with other nations.
In response, Japan has criticized China’s actions, labeling the export controls as unacceptable and urging their withdrawal. Japanese officials stated they are reviewing the potential impact of these measures and will contemplate appropriate responses. This development comes amid heightened tensions between the two nations, following Japan’s expansion of its defense strategy and military capabilities, which has been met with repeated opposition from Beijing, especially concerning issues related to Taiwan.
