The United States has refunded approximately $100 billion in tariffs that were collected under former President Donald Trump’s trade measures, following a Supreme Court decision declaring a substantial portion of these tariffs unlawful. This refund represents about 60% of the $165 billion initially collected prior to the court’s ruling. The tariffs, which targeted imported goods, were a key component of Trump’s trade policy, designed to promote domestic manufacturing, negotiate better trade terms, and boost government revenue.
In light of the court’s ruling, the administration has returned the collected duties to the companies that were affected. Nevertheless, the federal budget deficit has continued to grow, reaching $1.37 trillion in the first nine months of the fiscal year. This fiscal strain comes amid ongoing economic challenges and debates over trade policy.
Despite the refunds, the Trump administration has implemented a new set of tariffs, ranging from 10% to 12.5%, on imports from over 80 countries. These include major trading partners like India, China, the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, Australia, and the European Union. The administration cited concerns over products potentially linked to forced labor as the reason for these new tariffs.
The latest round of tariffs is already facing legal challenges. A coalition of 25 U.S. states has initiated efforts to block these measures, arguing that they unlawfully replace the tariffs previously nullified by the Supreme Court.
