In the latest Eurostat report, Luxembourg finds itself among the lowest-ranking European Union countries for renewable electricity consumption in 2025. Despite an overall increase in renewable energy use across the EU, Luxembourg’s figures show that only 23.3% of its gross electricity consumption comes from renewable sources, placing it just ahead of Czechia and Malta.
The data reveals that Luxembourg’s renewable sources made up 20.2% of its gross final energy consumption. This positions the country as one of the underperformers in the EU when it comes to embracing renewable energy. Meanwhile, the European Union as a whole saw renewable energy account for 26.2% of its gross final energy consumption in 2025, a significant rise from 9.6% in 2004. The EU has set an ambitious target to boost this share to 42.5% by 2030.
Leading the way in the EU’s renewable energy transition is Sweden, with an impressive 65.4% of its overall energy consumption sourced from renewables. Following closely are Finland and Denmark, demonstrating strong commitments to sustainable energy practices. Austria emerges as the frontrunner in renewable electricity consumption, with over 90% of its electricity generated from renewable sources.
These statistics underscore the varying levels of progress among EU nations in the shift towards renewable energy. While some countries are making substantial strides, others like Luxembourg still face challenges in increasing their reliance on sustainable energy sources. With the EU’s 2030 target on the horizon, the pressure is on for lagging nations to enhance their renewable energy infrastructure and policies.
