WhatsApp has taken a significant step in expanding its digital services by enabling users to pay everyday utility bills directly through its messaging platform. This new feature allows users to manage bill payments for a wide range of services without leaving the app.
The bill payment service is integrated with the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network, which supports over 22,700 billers across 30 different categories. These categories cover essential services such as electricity, gas, and water, as well as payments for FASTag, insurance, credit cards, and loan repayments.
To use this feature, WhatsApp users can simply access the bill payment option from the app’s home screen. They can then select their bill category and provider, input their account details, and review the bill amount before proceeding with the payment. The platform offers flexibility by supporting multiple payment methods, including UPI, debit cards, and credit cards.
In addition to making payments, users can also view their payment history, track upcoming bills, and manage multiple accounts with the same service provider, all within the WhatsApp app. This development positions WhatsApp as a comprehensive digital-services platform, streamlining the process of handling payments and other routine tasks without the need to switch between multiple applications.
This move reflects a broader trend among technology companies to integrate messaging platforms with digital financial services, providing users with more accessible payment options through their existing digital ecosystems. As a result, these platforms are becoming increasingly central to managing everyday financial transactions.
